The ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ of Moratuwa Sri Lanka is an independent state university located at Katubedda, Moratuwa overlooking the picturesque Bolgoda Lake. It was established as the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ of Moratuwa (UoM), Sri Lanka on 22 December 1978 under the Universities Act No.16 of 1978 and operates under the general direction of the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ Grants Commission. However, its origin can be traced back to the Government Technical School (GTS) which was established in Maradana, Colombo in 1893.
¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ of Moratuwa, consists of six Faculties namely, Architecture, Business, Engineering, Information Technology, Graduate Studies and Medicine with thirty six (36) academic departments offering fourteen (14) Bachelors degree programs to students selected by the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ Grants Commission (UGC) and fifty seven (57) postgraduate programs together with MSc, Phil & PhD research based postgraduate degrees.
The ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ has an undergraduate student population of 11,551 and these student numbers encompass 2360 undergraduate students (Including 3 foreign students) admitted in early 2025. It must be highlighted that the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ has increased the annual intake of students over 52% overall, during the last ten years, 20% in the Faculty of Engineering, 48% in the Faculty of Information Technology and 68% in the Faculty of Architecture to meet the increasing demand for our degree programs by students and their parents.
In 2024, 1457 (93%) of 1575 students, who sat the final examinations graduated within the minimum stipulated time period to obtain the first degree. The number of degrees conferred, including postgraduate, at the General Convocations 2024, a total of 2,140 degrees were conferred, including 1,647 bachelor’s degrees and 493 postgraduate degrees/diplomas .In addition, the Convocation for Postgraduate Degrees of the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ of Moratuwa was held, awarding 317 postgraduate degrees/diplomas.
Employment Pattern Survey done at the Convocation 2024 on employment patterns of graduates, reported that 86.7% of all graduates, 96.7% of Architecture graduates, 90.0% of Facilities Management graduates, 94.0% of Transport Logistic graduates. 96.3% of Business graduates were employed at the time of the convocation, showing that the graduates of UoM are much sought after by the industry and its employers.
According to the THE World ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ Rankings 2025, the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ of Moratuwa , in its first-ever participation, secured a position within the 1501+ band globally and was placed joint 3rd in Sri Lanka. In the THE Asia ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ Rankings 2025, the ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ was ranked in the 501–600 band in Asia.
According to the QS Asia Ranking 2025 ¸£ÀûÔÚÏß¿´ of Moratuwa is in the range of 501-520
